About The Netherlands

The Netherlands is a small country located between Belgium and Germany in Western Europe. The North Sea is located to the north of the country and forms the northern border of it. The North Sea would have washed away the Netherlands if the Dutch did not build coastal defenses for the protection of their country. Over time, the Dutch have built many canals, dams, dikes, and pumping stations to prevent the sea from flooding the country. Today more than 2,400 kilometers)of dikes shield the low-lying land from the North Sea. Without the existing dikes 65% of the country would be flooded daily. The name Netherlands means “low countries.” The country is sometimes called Holland, but the name only applies to two provinces, North and South Holland, which border the North Sea in Amsterdam and The Hague.

The Netherlands is one of the most sustainable study destinations in the world today.  Sustainability values are deeply rooted in Dutch culture. The country has a robust and eco-friendly transportation infrastructure and this is just another way that sustainability is woven into the Dutch way of life. Since 2017, the Dutch Railways has run its trains using using 100% wind energy. Many of the residents use bicycles for transportation in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, and other cities. There are three times as many bicycles as there are cars in the Netherlands. The Netherlands also currently houses the world’s highest density of charging stations for electric vehicles.

Tourism is an important aspect of the country's economy and people visit the Netherlands to see Dutch art, architecture—and the flowers. Tulips are a major industry, and the Dutch produce billions of bulbs a year—more than any other countryThe Netherlands has a rich history with historic cities and the highest museum density in the world. It’s also known for a flat landscape of canals, tulip fields, windmills and cycling routes. Amsterdam the capital, is home to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and the house where Jewish diarist Anne Frank hid during WWII. Canal-side mansions and a trove of works from artists including Rembrandt and Vermeer remain from the city's 17th-century "Golden Age."

The Netherlands is the most densely populated country in the European Union. The international community is great and English spoken as frequently as Dutch. The Netherlands is known to be one of the safest countries in the world, according to the 2018 Global Peace index and it belongs to the top 10 happiest countries in the world. There are few other study destinations better than the Netherlands.

The Netherlands is republic with a constitutional monarchy. The Dutch monarchy dates back to Prince William of Orange in the 16th century. King Willem-Alexander is the reigning monarch. The Dutch parliament called the States General has two houses. Elections are held every 4 years to select the 150 members of the Lower House and 15 members of the Upper House has 15 members who are elected by local councils for a four-year term. The king or ruling monarch appoints ministers who become part of the cabinet.
