At the core of the University of Tokaj's identity lies the illustrious Sárospatak Reformed College, a venerable institution founded in 1531, with roots dating back almost 500 years. Over time, it garnered strength and character through the patronage of Princess Consort Zsuzsanna Lorántffy in the 17th century, a period further enriched by the influence of John Amos Comenius, a prominent pedagogue of his era, who graced Sárospatak with his teachings. In 1857, the institution took a pivotal step by establishing an independent teacher training college, marking a significant milestone in its journey. Governance shifted between the state and the Tiszáninnen Reformed Diocese, reflecting its enduring importance in the realm of education.
