About Germany

Located in Central Europe, Germany is the second most populous country in the European continent. The country is made of 16 states and borders 9 countries. Belgium, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands at the western border, Denmark to the north, Austria and Switzerland to the south and Poland and the Czech Republic at the eastern border.

Germany has a social market economy and has the largest economy in Europe as well as low corruption rates. Statistically, it is in the top 10% of safest countries in the world. There are also many multicultural and diverse communities to live in which helps students to learn new customs and traditions.

Most German universities are public institutions and 6 of them are in the world’s top 100 universities while 18 are in the top 200. Tuition is free in public universities with administrative fees of €60-500 depending on the institution. Private universities charge tuition fees reaching up to €26 000/year, but some institutions provide scholarships to assist with costs associated with education. Students also have the chance to work part-time while they study with the minimum wage being €450/month. Students earning more than the baseline are required to pay taxes.

German universities put a strong focus on research, and this has led to the country being the third best country for international students in the world while it is first in Europe.
