About Cyprus
Cyprus, officially the Republic of Cyprus, is an island nation in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. It lies south of the Anatolian peninsula, and its continental location is disputed, as it is often counted as part of both Western Asia and Southeastern Europe. Cyprus is the third largest and third most populous island in the Mediterranean and lies south of Turkey, east of Greece, north of Egypt and west of Syria. Its capital and largest city is Nicosia.

Cyprus is an important tourist destination in the Mediterranean. The Republic of Cyprus has an advanced economy with high income and a very high human development index. It has been a member of the Commonwealth since 1961 and was a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement until it joined the European Union on 1 May 2004. On 1 January 2008, the Republic of Cyprus joined the Eurozone.
Cyprus has a subtropical climate - Mediterranean and semi-arid (in the north-eastern part of the island) with very mild winters (on the coast) and warm to hot summers. Snow is only possible in the Troodos Mountains in the central part of the island. Rain falls mainly in winter, summer is generally dry.

Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots have many cultural similarities due to cultural exchange, but also have differences. Some traditional foods (such as souvla and halloumi) and drinks are similar, as are expressions and ways of life. Hospitality and buying or offering food and drinks to guests or others are common in both communities. In both communities, music, dance and art are integral parts of social life, and many artistic, verbal and non-verbal expressions, traditional dances such as tsifteteli, similarities in dance costumes and the importance given to social activities are common to both communities.
