Established in 1774, Eszterházy Károly Catholic University (EKCU) stands as a venerable institution of higher education, proudly serving the communities of Eger and Jászberény. Rooted in its rich history, EKCU has emerged as a dynamic and leading center of academic excellence. With a steadfast commitment to teacher training, EKCU has been a prominent name in shaping pedagogical practices in Hungary for decades. The university has gained recognition for its pivotal role in the Complex Basic Programme, designed to usher in methodological innovations in Hungarian public education. Furthermore, it champions the Eszterházy Pedagogical Training Model, a highly practice-oriented approach.
Currently, EKCU boasts a vibrant community comprising nearly 6,500 students and a dedicated faculty of 250 university lecturers. Additionally, EKCU is the sole domestic higher education institution involved in the 9-year LIFE integrated project by the Ministry of Energy, aimed at advancing the National Energy and Climate Plan. It hosts the Coal Commission Secretariat, responsible for coordination and policy development in this context.
