Established in 1774, Eszterházy Károly Catholic University (EKCU) stands as a venerable institution of higher education, proudly serving the communities of Eger and Jászberény. Rooted in its rich history, EKCU has emerged as a dynamic and leading center of academic excellence. With a steadfast commitment to teacher training, EKCU has been a prominent name in shaping pedagogical practices in Hungary for decades. The university has gained recognition for its pivotal role in the Complex Basic Programme, designed to usher in methodological innovations in Hungarian public education. Furthermore, it champions the Eszterházy Pedagogical Training Model, a highly practice-oriented approach.
 

Currently, EKCU boasts a vibrant community comprising nearly 6,500 students and a dedicated faculty of 250 university lecturers. While cherishing its traditions and heritage, EKCU remains attuned to evolving social dynamics. The university houses internationally acclaimed knowledge centers and research groups that engage in applied research, often collaborating with regional economic stakeholders and participating in both domestic and international projects.
 

EKCU's research in viticulture and winemaking has earned international recognition, significantly contributing to sustainable agriculture across the Carpathian basin. Additionally, EKCU is the sole domestic higher education institution involved in the 9-year LIFE integrated project by the Ministry of Energy, aimed at advancing the National Energy and Climate Plan. It hosts the Coal Commission Secretariat, responsible for coordination and policy development in this context. EKCU proudly ranks among the top sports universities in Hungary, celebrating excellence beyond the classroom.

The Jászberény Campus specializes in providing high-quality, practice-oriented BA programs in fields such as Infant and Early Childhood Education, Pre-School Teacher Training, Teacher Training, Special Needs Education Training, and Community Organization.
