History of the University
 

Óbuda University traces its roots back to the rich legacy of Hungarian education and innovation. The journey began in 1879 when the Budapest State Central Industrial Office, the first legal predecessor of the institution, was established under the guidance of Minister Ágoston Trefort. Throughout its evolution, Óbuda University has been a beacon of academic excellence and economic development, producing notable figures such as Dániel Arany, Dr. Jenő Egerváry, and Ödon Lencz, who contributed significantly to the nation's economy and reputation.
 

The foundation of the Bánki Donát Mechanical Engineering Technical College and the Kandó Kálmán Electrical Engineering Technical College marked pivotal moments in creating a practice-oriented technical higher education environment in Budapest. In 1999, the integration of various independent colleges formed the Budapest College of Technology, eventually culminating in the establishment of Óbuda University in the 21st century. This institution carries the spirit of the original University of Óbuda founded in 1410, resonating with centuries of educational values and progress.

In the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) World University rankings for 2021, Óbuda University made a significant leap, moving from an unofficial range of 2000-2100 in 2019 to the 1079th position in 2020. This ascent underscores the university's commitment to excellence.

Among young universities, Óbuda University shines as one of the top 350, earning its place in Hungary's academic landscape. Notably, the university leads in computer science, achieving a ranking of 501-600 in THE subject rankings. Its position at 601-800 in the Engineering category further attests to the university's ascent in standards.
